A total of 8 project proposals had been submitted for the second call in 2010. The Wireless@KTH board decided on Dec 15th to follow the Program Council recommendation to fund two of these projects:

ylvafernaeus Wireless Textiles  – Project leader Ylva Fernaeus SICS, KTH participant: Dr Cristian Bogdan, CSC School,  Funding amount: 500 KSEK

The main goal with the proposed project is to develop a larger research consortium on the theme of “Wireless Textiles”, e.g. textile materials used as antennae, sensors, actuators, battery cells and charging devices for novel interactive use settings. The main deliverable will be a foundation for research grant applications based on a preparatory study, a set of initial demonstrators,and a complete list of collaborating industry partners and interest in participation.

On Dec 17 Tekn Lic Luca Stabellini defended his Ph.D thesis succesfully. Opponent was Professor Riku Jäntti, Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. Advisor from Wireless@KTH was Professor Jens Zander. The Committee was composed of Professor Mark Smith and  Professor Björn Pehrson, KTH, Sweden and Doctor Mikael Prytz, Ericsson, Sweden.

Toward Reliable Wireless Sensor Networks: Energy-Aware Distributed interference Management for Unlicensed Bands

Wireless sensor networks have been proposed as a cost effective and easy to deploy alternative to traditional wired systems in a multitude of application scenarios ranging from industrial automation to healthcare monitoring. They are expected to enable an unparalleled number of new services that will bring countless benefits to society. However, low power communications of sensor nodes operating in unlicensed bands face several challenges and are easily corrupted by transmissions of other collocated wireless networks. This problem has recently raised reliability concerns which have been tremendously enhanced by the proliferation of wireless devices we have been witnessing during the last years in the few available regions of the spectrum.

This dissertation studies how to achieve reliable communications by proposing different ways for the energy aware management of the radio interference problem. The use of wireless sensing technologies has been envisaged in a broad variety of settings: for this reason it is not possible to identify a unifying solution for the problem of interference, but rather it is necessary to tailor the design of communication schemes accounting for the specific communication paradigm adopted by sensors, the traffic pattern generated by the expected application, as well as for the channel conditions experienced by nodes.

When packet transmissions are addressed to a single receiver, cognitive access schemes can be utilized and sensors can opportunistically select for their transmissions when to access a certain channel or which channel to access so as to avoid interference. We provide an energy aware design for communication schemes implementing these ideas and evaluate their energy performance by means of experiments using real hardware. Our results indicate that the first approach should be considered only for sporadic packet transmissions over channels presenting limited interfering activities; channel adaptation should instead be preferred for large bulks of data or when the risk of operating in heavily interfered frequency bands is high.

We further propose and evaluate a novel adaptive frequency hopping algorithm: this algorithm has been shown to be very efficient in mitigating the negative effects of interference allowing at the same time to avoid the use of the energy costly spectrum sensing algorithms required by cognitive access schemes. However, none of these three approaches may be suitable for scenarios where packet transmissions are addressed to multiple receivers. To deal with the packet losses that nodes may experience over noisy or interfered channels we envisage the use of fountain codes and show how it is possible to engineer such a coding solution so as to reduce the complexity and overhead introduced by the encoding and decoding procedures. The resulting codes provide an efficient way for disseminating data over multi-hop wireless sensor networks. Results obtained in this dissertation can be of great utility for designers of sensor applications who can use them in order to select the most energy efficient way to achieve reliable interference-aware communications.

The Swedish regulator PTS posted on December 13 an invitation to auction of the 800 GHz band. The auction is planned to start on 28 February and those interested must apply no later than 31 January 2011.

The 800 MHz band is attractive for many different kinds of service, such as wireless broadband or mobile telephony. The band comprises six licences (2×5 MHz each). A similar auction conducted in Germany earlier this year resulted in a total of €4.38bn.

As the frequency band has good propagation characteristics, PTS is imposing a coverage requirement on one of the licences. This rollout shall take place at a fixed cost set at the auction (at least SEK 150m and at most SEK 300m).

As the spectrum was made available through the digitalization of the terrestrial television (the digital dividend), there is a risk for that television reception deployed in the 800 band is being affected when the band is started to be used. Licence holders in the 800 MHz band must therefore deal with any television reception problems that may arise from the interference.

Promoting New Telecom Infrastructures
Markets, Policies and Pricing

This book, edited by Morten Falch, Center for Communication Media and Information Technology (CMI), Aalborg University Copenhagen, Denmark and Jan Markendahl, Wireless@KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, is of interest to academics and researchers of telecommunications policy, innovation and technology studies, as well as those concerned with regulation and governance.

Promoting New Telecom Infrastructures examines how current telecom infrastructures are transforming from dedicated networks supporting either voice, data or broadcasting services to converged networks that support a wide variety of communication services, often denoted as Next Generation Networks (NGN).

A current key challenge is therefore to define strategies, which can stimulate demand and investments in NGN in order to ensure development of adequate information infrastructures. With contributions from leading authorities in the field, this innovative book explores the three key themes related to this challenge and to strategies for the stimulation of demand and supply for NGN: strategies for expansion of broadband, pricing in NGN and development and pricing of mobile services.

Open collaboration on Green ICT

The recently held Kista Green ICT conference addressed various aspects of how ICT can get more sustainable as well as enable more sustainable solutions. With representatives from Ericsson, Microsoft and IBM, presenting new business approaches to the global challenges, there were much emphasis on connected cities, the Internet of Things, dematerialization (doing more with less) and collaboration.

The Greek city Veria is already in many ways a smart city, with a wireless network offering e-services for health monitoring, education and for tourism. Along with the green ICT solution there must be an understanding of human attitudes and behavior. That this is sometimes more difficult to change than the technology, was a shared experience of IBM Research center for smarter cities in Dublin. The technology to reduce energy consumption in data centers by 40 % exists, stated senior researcher Pól Mac Aonghusa, but people are conservative in the ways of viewing the problem.

To see the problem in a new perspective, or even realizing that the problem is a totally different one, was the key points in the presentation by Stephen Emmott, head of Microsoft’s Computational Science Research. A group of international and multidisciplinary scientists are working on improving the carbon climate model, demonstrating that the human induced CO2 emissions are just a fraction of the natural systems processes. But we still do not understand how these systems really work.

The urgency to start acting on the facts we know and to collaborate in order to achieve new insights faster should concern us all. Sharing both platforms and data can bring new light from all corners of the scientific community. The Kista Green ICT conference was really about sharing for free, all speakers contributing without charge, making it possible for many delegates, especially students, to participate without cost.

A group of companies and organizations that work towards setting a national ( and hopefully global) standard for Green ICT, together with the Swedish Standards Institute, invited anyone who wish to be part of the work to join the technical committee. Minimizing the energy usage in current and upcoming wireless standards is one of the energy-efficient wireless networking principles that the Wireless@KTH  project eWIN aim at developing. Doing more with less is vital for the whole ICT industry consuming up to 10% of the world’s energy and doubling every five years.

Researchers at KTH and collaborating institutions are invited to submit proposals for funding of small projects and guest researchers visiting KTH working within the scope of the research program of Wireless@KTH. Of particular interest are projects and visitors that can bring in new ideas and views that potentially could spawn new projects in collaboration between KTH and center industry partners.

Magnus Almgren – in memoriam

2001_11_28almgrenLong-time guest-researcher, co-author of texbooks, a dear friend  – Magnus Almgren – passed away at the age of 62  a few weeks ago. Magnus Almgren spent most of his career at Ericsson Research. He was guest researcher, participant in many Wireless@KTH projects and guest lecturer at KTH in our courses in Wireless Networks. To KTH students, Magnus was most well known as the co-inventor of  RUNE – one of the earliest and most spread simulation tools for cellular systems performance evaluation. He was also  one of the co-authors of the book “Radio Resource Management in Wireless Networks” published in 2001.  Magnus was always a welcome guest at KTH and with his out-of-the-box thinking a true and constant source of inspiration to our students. We miss you, Magnus!

During a week in the end of June and early July 2010 researchers Bengt G Mölleryd and Jan Markendahl at Wireless @ KTH conducted a study visit to Japan together with Professor Per Andersson and Dr Christopher Rosenqvist, at Stockholm School of Economics.

A number of companies, among them NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic R&D Center, SonyFelicia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication and an e-learning center at Aoyama Gakuin University were visited.

The main impression from the visit was, not surprisingly, that Japan is a highly advanced society when it comes to communication solutions, like NFC for the transport sector and payment solutions. The deployment of fiber in the access network is primarily hanged on poles, which reduces capex considerable.

Moreover, mobile operators have succeeded to establish value added services with a ubiquitous usage of mobile email. But in comparison to the Swedish mobile operators Japanese operators have limited access to spectrum, which is illustrated by the fact that DoCoMo aim to launch LTE with 5 MHz.

Although ICT is extensively present in the Japanese society the domestic industry has not succeeded to export its solutions on the international market. Consequently, the Japanese Communications Ministry and Industry has set out to take a leading role in the post-internet area by developing a New Generation Network, which is planned to replace the currently rolled out Next Generation Network. The aim with the New Generation Network is that should be capable to manage the massive broadband traffic that is expected to flow in the networks around the year 2020.

SSF launches a new call in the area of Software intensive systems. The program envisages 5 year projects and the total budget is up to160 MSEK. Wireless@KTH will promote and co-fund applications for projects  from KTH research groups in the field of Mobile/Wireless Systems and Services that are to be performed in collaboration with our industry partners.
