Internet of things – why aren’t we there yet?

Friday Seminar
Date and time: October 16, 2015 15.00 - 16.30
Place: Wireless@kth/EIT Digital co-location centre, Isafjordsgatan 26, Electrum building, Floor 3, elevator C
Speaker: Claus Popp Larsen

Internet of things (IoT) is on the very top of Gartner’s Hype Cycle for emerging technologies, politicians have learned to say that internet of things is important for the society, and every research unit active within information and communication technologies – and with some level of self-preservation – is involved in IoT-activities. So with all this buzz around IoT, what is really the status of the technology?

This presentation will argue that we don’t have any IoT yet. We have billions of connected devices but that is not the same as IoT. What we have is many embryos of IoT. One of the main problems to achieve one single IoT is the lack of open service platforms including collaboration models and business models; it is not the lack of technology itself. Focussing on eHealth and facility services the presentation will give practical examples on the status of (the lack) IoT as well as suggesting sustainable collaboration and business models inspired by the sharing economy.

Speaker is Claus Popp Larsen, Head of business & innovation area ‘Urban Life’ at Swedish ICT
