Abstract: Assessing energy consumption in radio access networks, in particular cellular mobile access networks, has proved challenging owing to the lack of a coherent framework which identifies the key performance metrics to measure in terms of both energy consumption and throughput capability. The purpose of this seminar is to present recent thoughts, analyses and results which address relevant metrics and combine these into figures of merit which can guide the planning of a RAN to meet capacity demands in an energy efficient manner. In particular, the framework allows competing RAN topologies to be consistently compared on the basis of joint energy consumption and througput performance.
