Exploiting electromagnetic angular momentum in wireless communications

WHERE: EIT Digital Open Area, Electrum WHEN: April 22, 2016 14.30 PM - 16.00 PM
Information transfer with electromagnetic (EM) fields is possible due to the fact these fields transport physical observables from a source to a (possibly very) remote observer in the form of volumetric densities. Therefore, it is only after these densities have been integrated over a finite volume that they appear as observables and can be used for extracting the information transferred. Consequently, an observer’s measurements are always nonlocal averages and cannot provide exact values of the fields themselves at a given [...]

Several metrics have been widely applied to quantify the “energy efficiency” of the Internet and ICT. Energy efficiency metrics are widely used to compare the energy efficiency of equipment and networks. Energy/bit has also been used to estimate network power consumption. To date, the definition and use of Internet energy efficiency metrics has been somewhat ad-hoc, without a careful analysis of their definition, application and how they relate. In this talk we analyse and compare these metrics when applied to [...]

Extending full-coverage terrestrial broadcast to broadband

WHERE: EIT Digital Open Area, Electrum Kista WHEN: October 21, 2016 14.30 - 16.00
A new system concept for Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT), called “WiB”, is presented, where potentially all frequencies within the UHF band are used on all transmitter (TX) sites (i.e. reuse-1). Interference, especially from neighbouring transmitters operating on the same frequency and transmitting different information, is handled by a combination of a robust transmission mode, directional discrimination of the receiving antenna and interference cancellation methods. With this approach DTT may be transmitted as a single wideband signal, covering potentially the entire [...]

Super Coverage and Capacity, Nationwide, Open, Green Site Hotels for LTE and 5G

WHERE: EIT Digital Open Area, Electrum Kista WHEN: November 25, 2016 14.30 PM - 16.00 PM
Globally 2,5 million telecom tower sites were built for GSM voice with 3 sector 18 dBi antennas for > -104 dBm indoor. To deliver LTE full data rates and full spectrum efficiency requires -72 dBm, or 32 dB higher signal.  This is only possible with phased array antennas and a cascade of total site improvements including very few but stronger and higher towers with capacity for 18 sectors and all bands and operators incl. MIMO8. Thereby obtaining dramatic techno-economic KPI’s to  deliver [...]

Device-to-device Communication: From Classic to Cooperative and Social

WHERE: EIT Digital Open Area, Floor 3, Elevator C, Electrum Building, Kista WHEN: October 20, 2017 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Abstract Device-to-device communication underlaying the cellular infrastructure has been proposed as a means of taking advantage of the physical proximity of communicating devices, increasing resource  utilization, reducing latency and improving cellular coverage. In this presentation we suggest that device-to-device communication is also a technology enabler of extending the cellular coverage   and involving end users in cellular service provisioning. We discuss the issue of incentivizing  users for taking part in cellular service provisioning as relay nodes, and how social ties between users can be [...]
